Speech from Grand Master

on the ceremony at Vovinam - Viet Vo Dao Altar Hall

for the foreign disciples who participate in the first

Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao International tournament (July 23, 2003)

Dear International Vovinam - Viet Vo Dao masters, instructors and disciples:

It is my pleasure to welcome all of you who have come from many countries to gather here at the Vovinam – Viet Vo Dao Altar Hall to pay respects to the late Founder’s picture and remains during your trip to participate in the Vovinam –Viet Vo Dao International tournament in Ho chi Minh city in 2003.

Your presence sends a deep message conveying the respectful spirit you have towards your Masters.  It is important to remember those who have taught you the skills and lessons you have acquired. As the old saying goes, remember and be grateful to the person who dug the well from which you drink water from. This is a wonderful tradition that commontly shares by the human race. It is not only respectful but carries a special meaning since it represents the 65th anniversary of Vovinam – Viet Vo Dao (1938-2003). This is an important milestone in the timeline of building and developing the Vovinam - Viet Vo Dao school.

I, the Grand Master give my compliment to all masters and instructors who have put their efforts into developing Vovinam among your native countries , and those who have overcome adversity in order to participate in the 2003 Tournament.

On this occasion and before the opening of the tournament, I want to remind each of you :  Although it is integrated with contemporary sportsmanship in the world of martial arts today, our discipline still strongly recognizes and develops in depth the values that construct and develop well-rounded individuals who are successful in life, respected and loved by others. The true essence of Vovinam lies at its martial arts code of ethics.  This code of ethics is a way of life that guides us to navigate successfully in our lives.

A martial arts code of ethics that is honorable, chivalrous, and respectful to the rule of laws but is also free and flexible; this code of ethics will help guide everyone to contribute constructively toward the common goods based on equality and humanity.

Thus, wherever martial arts are developed, martial arts ethics are elevated and cultivated, the livelihood at these places is stable and its people are enriched.

These are my humble thoughts during your visit today.  I hope that we will have the opportunity to discuss and to further understand the martial arts ethics of Vovinam-VVD.

I wish all participating teams many successes during this competition, developing lasting friendships with other disciples, and exploring the many beauties that the people and country of Vietnam have to offer.

Sincerely Yours.
