Toâi quen vôùi Voõ sö Caåm Bình töø naêm 1985 – 1990 taïi tröôøng Evergreen Valley College... luùc ñoù coâ ñang mang baàu ñöùa thöù nhaát roài ñöùa thöù 2.. theá maø cuõng ñi hoïc ñeàu ñaëng, cuõng ra tröôøng Ñaïi hoïc... Sau khi toát nghieäp ra tröôøng, baúng ñi moät thôøi gian, do coâng aên vieäc laøm baän roän neân khoâng gaëp maët ñaõ hôn 10 naêm. Tình côø trong buoåi leã phaùt thöôûng toâi gaëp laïi coâ, thaáy ñang lui cui chuïp hình, hoûi thaêm môùi bieát ngöôøi ñöùng treân saân khaáu ñang noùi chuyeän laø con trai cuûa coâ – Beù Ñöùc Uy môùi ngaøy naøo laåm ñaåm böôùc ñi.. nay ñaõ lôùn, toát nghieäp ra tröôøng laïi ñoå ñaàu thuû khoa. Ñaây laø nieàm haõnh dieän cho coäng ñoàng ngöôøi Vieät taïi vuøng Baéc Cali. Neân toâi vieát baøi naøy ñeå giôùi thieäu veà Ñöùc Uy moät taøi naêng môùi cuûa coäng ñoàng.

Traàn Ñöùc Uy laø moät moân sinh Vovinam taïi San Jose, con cuûa voõ sö Traàn Bình vaø Caåm Bình. Teân Ñöùc Uy laø do voõ sö Lyù Hoaøng Caùt Long ( Chicago) ñaët cho khi sinh ra ñôøi naêm 1985.

Naêm 3 tuoåi em ñaõ hoïc thuoäc loøng caùc maãu töï ABC... vaø ca ñöôïc baûn nhaïc VOVINAM TAÂM CA.

Töø nhoû khi sinh ra theå chaát em khoâng ñöôïc maïnh khoûe luoân bò beänh, phaûi uoáng thuoác moãi ngaøy, nhôø cha meï khuyeán khích em ñi taäp voõ neân cô theå em trôû neân khaù hôn, tuy nhieân taäïp voõ ñoái vôùi em chæ giuùp cho cô theå maïnh khoûe chôù khoâng chuû yeáu leân ñai, neân suoát hôn 12 naêm taäp luyeän em chæ mang lam ñai I caáp.

Em ñi hoïc tieáng Vieät vaøo luùc 6 tuoåi vaø ñaõ ra tröôøng taïi trung Taâm Vieät Ngöõ Vaên Lang lôùp 6 luùc 13 tuoåi sau khi hoïc xong caùc lôùp laøm thô vaên... Sau ñoù em trôû laïi laøm phuï giaùo daïy tieáng Vieät 2 naêm cho Tröôøng Vieät Ngöõ Vaên Lang.

Töø luùc ñi hoïc lôùp maãu giaùo cho ñeán lôùp 12, em ñeàu ñöùng nhaát, em ñaõ ñöôïc vaøo hoïc chöông trình ñaëc bieät (GATE) daønh cho caùc treû em thoâng minh ñeå hoïc theâm nhöõng moân ñaëc bieät veà phaùt trieån taøi naêng tuoåi treû.

Baûn taùnh raát thoâng minh, baøi vôõ nhìn qua laø hieåu bieát laøm lieàn khoâng caàn suy nghó, taát caû baøi taäp laøm ôû nhaø Ñöùc Uy chæ laøm trong voøng nöõa tieáng, hoaëc cao laém laø 1 tieáng ñoàng hoà laø xong heát. Thôøi gian coøn laïi em ñoïc saùch, nghieân cöùu veà internet, ñaøn döông caàm... nhaø ngheøo khoâng coù tieàn ñi hoïc ñaøn, em chæ hoïc moät lôùp cô baûn cuûa tröôøng daïy, sau ñoù möôïn saùch ñeå töï hoïc moät mình, do yù thích neân em ñaõ töï ñaøn ñöôïc moät mình vaø ñaõ nghieân cöùu nhieàu baûn nhaïc cuûa caùc nhaïc só noåi danh, vaø ñaõ töï saùng taùc nhaïc moät mình ñöôïc. Tuy nhieân aâm nhaïc chæ laø söï giaûi trí chôù khoâng phaûi laø ngheà nghieäp neân Ñöùc Uy khoâng muoán phaùt huy khaû naêng veà ngaønh aâm nhaïc.

Ñöùc Uy coù hoïc qua 2 lôùp cô baûn veà maùy vi tính (computer) , sau ñoù tieáp tuïc töï hoïc moät mình baèng caùch möôïn saùch töø thö vieän. Khoaûng töø lôùp 6, Khi Meï em daïy voõ taïi trung taâm Santee, em vaøo vaên phoøng giuùp vieäc cho caùc supervisors cuûa trung taâm nhö Mr. Arts Nóno, Mr Sevando..., em ñaõ giuùp chæ daãn heä thoáng internet vaø laøm giuùp hoà sô cho trung taâm naøy. Caùc supersisors raát öa thích, phuïc taøi vaø khen taëng laø thoâng minh. Sau naày vì baän roän vôùi vieäc hoïc, em khoâng coù tôùi trung taâm nöõa, caùc Supersiors naày vaãn luoân nhôù em, thöôøng xuyeân hoûi thaêm veà em, vaø hay khen taëng vaø giôùi thieäu veà em tröôùc maët moïi ngöôøi moãi khi noùi chuyeän vôùi meï em. Em ñaõ laäp ra website cho VOVINAM San Jose ( http://vovinamUS.com) luùc 15 tuoåi. Ñaõ ñöôïc hoïc khu East Side High School District möôùn em laøm webdesign cho hoïc khu. Nhöng vì lyù do söùc khoûe cha meï em ñaõ khoâng cho em ñi laøm.

Em luoân ñöôïc haïng A: 4 chaám töø lôùp 4 ñeán lôùp 12, moãi naêm em ñeàu nhaän ñöôïc nhieàu baèng khen cuûa tröôøng vaø phaàn thöôûng cuûa hoäi phuï huynh vaø giaùo chöùc quaän haït Santa Clara.

Em tham gia nhieàu hoäi ñoaøn trong tröôøng nhö: Hoäi hoïc sinh Vieät Nam, hoäi YMCA, hoäi vuõ caàu, hoäi nhaø baùo cuûa tröôøng, chuû tòch cuûa hoäi Toaùn vaø Anh ngöõ (MESA – Math & English Students Association) vaø laø chuû nhieäm (Editor) cuûa year book naêm 2003 cuûa tröôøng trung hoïc Overfelt. Em ñaõ tham gia nhieàu coâng taùc thieän nguyeän nhö giuùp ñôû laøm saïch thaønh phoá (clean up), ñi boä, chaïy tröôøng löïc (walk-a-thon, run-a-thon) gaây quyõ giuùp cho caùc hoäi Ung Thö, Tim, Phoåi (Cancer, Heart Attack, Lung Cancer,) baùn keïo, röûa xe gaây quyõ cho caùc hoäi nhaø tröôøng

Ñieåm thi SAT cuûa em ñöôïc 97 - 99% neân ñöôïc hoïc boång cuûa chính phuû (Califonria Scholaship Federation) taëng cho 3 naêm, moãi naêm $1000. Naêm 2002 em ñi thi toaùn vaø Anh ngöõ ñaäu haïng nhaát toaøn tröôøng, roài thi thaéng haïng nhaát toaøn thaønh taïi San Jose State University,vaø ñöôïc haïng nhaát toaøn tieåu bang taïi UC. David. em ñaõ ñoaït ñöôïc gaàn 20 huy chöông trong nieân hoïc 2002- 2003.

Trong ngaøy tuyeân döông toaøn tröôøng cuoái neân hoïc (Honor Day) cuûa Overfelt High School, ngaøy 4 thaùng 6 naêm 2003, Ñöùc Uy ñaõ nhaän ñöôïc caùc baèng danh döï nhö sau:

Ngaøy 12 thaùng 6 naêm 2003 Traàn Ñöùc Uy ñoå Thuû Khoa, ñöôïc saép haïng 1 treân 430 hoïc sinh ra tröôøng taïi tröôøng trung hoïc Overfelt, San Jose. Tröôùc maáy ngaøn ngöôøi goàm caùc vieân chöùc chính quyeàn, giaùo sö, hoc sinh, phuï huynh vaø quan khaùch cuûa tröôøng, vôùi ñoàng phuïc ra tröôøng (nam aùo xanh, nöõ aùo traéng), vôùi giaây vaøng vaø huy chöông haïng nhaát ñeo treân coå (Valedictorian Medal) , em ñaõ ñaïi dieän cho 430 hoïc sinh ra tröôøng ñænh ñaïc leân khaùn ñaøi ñoïc dieãn vaên huøng hoàn ñöôùi söï voã tay taùn thöôûng cuûa moïi ngöôøi.

Ngaøy 15 thaùng 6 naêm 2003, cuõng taïi tröôøng Overfelt do hoäi phuï huynh vaø giaùo chöùc haït Santa Clara toå chöùc phaùt thöôûng haøng naêm cho taát caû caùc em hoïc sinh xuaát saéc Vieât Nam, moät laàn nöõa Thuû Khoa Traàn Ñöùc Uy ñaïi dieän cho caùc hoïc sinh leân saân khaáu noùi tröôùc hai ngaøn quan khaùch ñeå caùm ôn cha meï, thaày coâ vaø nhaän thöôûng quaø taëng ñaëc bieät töø hoäi phuï huynh vaø giaùo chöùc: moät taám plaque vaø moät chi phieáu $100. Caùc baùo ñòa phöông nhö Thôùi Baùo, Tin Vieät, Calitoday News, nhaát laø Vieät-Mercury news moät tôø baùo lôùn nhaát vuøng vònh ñaõ chuïp hình, phoûng vaán vaø vieát baøi ñaêng leân baùo. Em ñaõ noäp ñôn vaøo 5 tröôøng ñaïi hoïc thuoäc heä thoáng UC ôû Cali nhö: UC David, UC Berkley, UC Riverside, UC Santa Cruz, UCLA. Taát caû caùc tröôøng ñeàu nhaän em vaøo hoïc, tröôøng UC Santa Cruz vaø UC Riverside nhaän em vôùi hoïc boång (Regent -Scholarship) laø $10,000, caùc tröôøng khaùc thì cho ít hôn khoaûng $4,500. Nhöng em thích tröôøng UCLA hôn neân ñaõ laøm thuû tuïc giaáy tôø vaøo tröôøng naày vaøo thaùng 9 tôùi ñaây vôùi moân hoïc laø Biochem. Tieàn hoïc phí cho noäi truù laø $19,000 moät naêm, em ñaõ xin ñöôïc nhieàu hoïc boång toång coäng $18,000 gia ñình chæ toán khoaûng $1000 moät naêm, nhöng em döï ñònh seõ laøm work study theâm ñeå cha meï ñôû toán keùm. Ñöôïc hoûi töông lai em muoán theo ngaønh gì? thì em ñaùp: coù theå laø Medical hoaëc laø Pharmacist...

“And thus conscience doth make cowards of us all.

And thus the native hue of resolution is sicklied over with the pale cast of thought.

And enterprises of great pitch and moment,

With this regard, their currents, turn awry,

And lose the name of action.”

This quote from Shakespeare’s Hamlet hodls a message for those of graduating here today. I will illustrate with a personal example. You see, I have been attracted to a certain girl for over a year now. In fact, she’s graduating with me at this very moment, but I’ve never told her and probably never will. Oh, I have fancied telling her before. I’ve played out every possible scenario in my mind, but that’s all I’ve done. Now I realize it’s too late, for after today, we are all moving on. My classmates, Shakespeare’s words indicate that we must not wait until it is too late to do something. When opportunities present themselves, we must grasp them. When we have a chance to do something, we must do it. Carpe diem! We must seize the day!

But how do we go about seizing the day? How do we take the initiative ? The first step is simple to try things out. Theodore Roosevelt said, {He} who...knows, in the end, the triumph of high chievement, and who... if he fails, at least...fails while daring greatly,.. his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat.” We can begin to take initiative on a small scale. When we wake up in the morning, we shouldn’t just close our eyes and let the alarm ring, but turn it off, and face the day. For those of us joing the work force, when the workday is about to start, we shouldn’t loiter around, but arrive on time and begin earnestly. for those of us going on to the college, at the end classes when we have homework, we shouldn’t procrastinate but do it right away, and be prepared for the next day. It is these small, mundance activities that are important. We connot seize the day, until we actually start the day. Still, it is not that simple. We must reach for greater goals. Although some of us already have plans for our lives, there are a few who aren’t certain as yet. There are many among us who have great talents,. and we must not let them go to waste. Why should we settle for something easy and in our grasp when we can aspire for something so much greater ? Why should we be just software engineers when we might own a company that hires them? There is no reason why. We need to reach for that something greater and take chances in order to attain it.

As graduates, we must live our lives by seizing the day! We must begin small, keeping our greater goals in mind. Before we can triumph, we must be willing to dare greatly. We must not let our resolutions be clouded by our thoughts and thus lose the name of action. We must clearly recognize our goals and pursue them, without hesitation.

I am writing this recommendation letter for Mr. Uy Tran, a student in good standing at William C. Overfelt High School, San Jose California. I have been acquainted with Uy during his high school career and I am familiar with his performance in Physiology.

Uy is an outstanding science student. Uy earned a straight A in my very demanding Physiology course. He is an ‘A’ student in every aspect of the grade. His performance is the top of his academic class and had perfect attendance records. In high school, Uy performed at an overall 4.0 CSU grade point average taking the very toughest academic classes on campus including Physics, Calculus and English 3 Honors. He is dependendable, through and dedicated towards his academic goals. The quality of his work was above most other students.

Uy has demonstrated the finest personal qualities whole at Overfelt High School and during our interaction. His fine personality is both attractive and enhances his relationship with both his peers and his instructors. He is a member of National Honor Society, Califonia Scholaship Federation, and the current president of our outstanding MESA chapter president.
