Effective leaders are known as good communicators.  We expect them to be able to articulate ideas, motivate us through persuasion, and to even be able to entertain us.

 

People aren’t born knowing how to speak to groups, any more than they are born knowing how to talk.  In other words, public speaking is a skill that all of us can cultivate.  More precisely, it is a skill that we must cultivate if we want to continue to grow and develop as leaders.

 

Many people have over come their problem of public speaking.  Followings are some basic suggestions for becoming a better communicator and leaders.

 

HOW TO PREPARE AN EFFECTIVE SPEECH

 

1.                  Get excited about your topic.

2.                  Analyze your audience.

3.                  Have a beginning, middle, and end to your speech.

4.                  Use brief notes, if necessary.  (Don’t memorize word-for-word)

5.                  Practice (in front of another person where possible).

6.                  Know the environment.

7.                  Visualize success.

 

HOW TO GIVE AN EFFECTIVE SPEECH

 

1.                  Be prepared.

2.                  Be yourself.

3.                  Stay within your timeframe.

4.                  Summarize main points.

5.                  Smile.

 

TIPS FOR OVERCOMING NERVOUSNESS

 

1.                  Accept the fact that you are nervous.

2.                  Be ready early.

3.                  Focus on three reasons why you will be successful.

4.                  Keep giving speeches.
